A Day In The Life of an Administrator

Michelle Felstead is the Administrator at Ashley Grange, the nursing home in Downton, Wiltshire, which Hartford Care acquired in November 2020. She explains how she got into caring and what her job entails.

My journey into care

Coming from South Africa to the UK, I was looking for an administrative position and never thought of working for a care home. Being offered this position at Ashley Grange gave me a great insight into what a hard job it is to work in a care home. It is one of the noblest jobs and I admire each and every one working in this field.

What my role involves.

Apart from planning and actioning the monthly rota, I deal with all staff-related queries and administration at Ashley Grange. It keeps me very busy every day.

Describe a typical day

Most days I get to the office early as one of my biggest tasks is checking in on all the team members, making sure the Home duties are covered and everyone is happy.

I prioritise my workload straight after and attend to the urgent matters at hand. I make sure all reports are completed before 10:00 am on specific days just in case something else crops up and I have to make changes.

Between answering the calls and assisting visitors, I try to attend to all emails then go onto administration and staff queries or whatever else falls in my lap.

What I love most of all about my job

I love the team. They are all amazing and caring, and everyone shares the same vision and is dedicated to that mission. This truly creates a family environment where everybody is there for each other. The team is loyal, and I know I can always count on them.

How I would encourage other people to make caring their career?

To get into this career for the right reasons and that is having a passion for helping people and to return home to your family with a huge smile on your face knowing that you have ultimately achieved what you intended. That is to support others to live their life to the full and to make a real difference to them.
