From Care Assistant to Home Manager

Alex Mazur-Kruszynska, Home Manager of Stokeleigh, takes us through her career progression at Hartford Care from Care Assistant to Manager

I joined Hartford Care on 15th January 2007, as a care assistant at Stokeleigh in Bristol and became the home’s manager in July 2016. I applied for the manager’s position internally while I was working as Stokeleigh’s deputy manager.

Career Goals

I did not have any specific career goals in care. I qualified in Poland as a special education teacher and an English teacher. Initially, I only wanted to gain some experience working in the UK so that one day, I would be able to work with children with multiple needs. But it did not quite work out that way. Life had a different scenario written for me!

Training

During my time at  Stokeleigh,  I undertook all the necessary training to be where I am now. I started with NVQ2 and completed my Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care in 2012. I have also completed Hartford Care Academy Leadership Programme after becoming a Manager and since then, I have also completed my Train the Trainer in Manual Handling.

I very much enjoy training as this is probably something I would see myself doing in the future. This must be the teacher in me coming out!  In particular, I enjoyed my mentoring sessions with Leah-Marie Smith, our HR Director. She has been a great help, is a fountain of knowledge and has an amazing way about her. But I would say that everyone working at Hartford Care is happy to help and always a great support.

I think everyone I have come across in my working life has had an impact on me though it was possibly my own personal drive which inspired me to do something different by making caring my career.

Opportunities

My advice to anyone coming into caring is stay patient and look for new opportunities to learn, because as I have discovered, there are lots of chances to progress within Hartford Care.
