Hartford Care recently launched an appeal to help create a special crochet blanket for Iris, a resident at Tegfield House who turned 104 last month. The local Winchester community responded with kindness and enthusiasm. Many of Iris’s family members and fellow residents also got involved. Together, they created a beautiful blanket, which was presented to Iris as a heartfelt birthday surprise.

Sarah Robertson, Home Manager at Tegfield House, says:

“We received so many crochet squares from families of our residents and the local community. Myself and care assistant Sandra Gosling sewed all the squares together. It made us realise how wonderful our home and local community are to get behind our appeal and make it happen – we spent hours sewing it together!

“One of our residents’ great-granddaughters made an extra special square with a pig in it, which ties into Iris’ history as her husband Rex used to keep a pig in their garden! It was lovely to be part of Iris’s special day, and we’re so pleased she had a nice time and loves her blanket!”

To celebrate Iris’s birthday, her niece Ann and Ann’s husband John joined a party hosted at Tegfield House.

Ann commented:

“Thank you to everyone for making Aunty Iris’ 104th birthday so special. Tegfield House always does birthdays so well with lovely celebrations, food and cake. Aunty Iris couldn’t believe the blanket was really for her. She was stunned to find out the local community had come together to make it for her.”
